Asthmatics should not smoke

Smokers suffering from asthma can alleviate their lungs work through giving up cigarettes.

Dutch scientists found that inhalation of cigarette smoke leads to thickening of the airway epithelium. This is the reason why asthmatic smokers suffer more: they have more severe shortness of breath and profuse secretion of mucus.

Researchers studied 147 people suffering from asthma. 35 of them were smokers, 46 - ex-smokers and 66 never smoked. They found that smokers have more cells that produce mucus. Also, smokers suffer from a constantly going inflammatory process in lungs.

If you stop smoking, you can stop thickening of lining in airways.
