Inflammatory Protein Determines The Risk Of Heart Attack

November 4, 2009.
People with high levels of C-reactive protein (a marker of inflammation in the blood analysis) are in the zone of high risk of heart attack.

The study involved 2 240 men older than 40 years. Each of them gave their blood and passed examinations for risk factors evaluation for heart attack and stroke. For eight years, 198 participants have suffered from strokes and 156 heart attacks and 586 people died. It was found that higher levels of protein above three milliliters per liter of 70% increased risk of heart attack and 55% increased the risk of death.

The level of protein also associated with risk of developing diabetes, smoking, alcohol consumption and physical activity.
