New Classification Of Gastric Cancer For Better Treatment

An international team of scientists has invented a new method for classification of gastric cancer, which greatly facilitates this treatment.

Asia has the highest mortality from stomach cancer. Genomic analysis of patients in Singapore has allowed to create a new classification for the disease.

The researchers paid attention to the signal paths of development of tumors, although the previous classification based on the type of cells. They found three signaling pathways for 70% of tumors, as well as how their combination is associated with survival of patients.

Stomach cancer is resistant to chemotherapy, and patients do not live more than five years. However, the new classification will help doctors choose the individual treatment. They studied 301 tumor models to calculate 11 activation levels of signaling cells, already known in connection with cancer. Three pathways, affecting the growth and death of cells (NF-kappa B, Wnt / β-catenin and cell proliferation / stem cell) violated in most tumors.
