The study conducted by specialists from the Medical Center at Columbia University (USA), showed that the cure for cancer could recover daily memory in people with Alzheimer's disease.
Alzheimer's disease as a form of senile dementia will affect 120 million people worldwide by 2050. The main cause of illness is accumulations of amyloid protein, which causes inflammation and death of nerve cells. Amyloid is produced in the small intestine and it is released into the bloodstream, from which it enters the brain. Very often the first sign of disease is the deterioration of short-term memory. Scientists have studied the action of drugs for cancer from the family of HDAC-inhibitors that act on DNA. Experiments on mice have shown that the drug facilitates the process of making proteins, the neurons of the brain, and this process plays a key role in forming new memories. According to the experts, the drug is already approved to treat certain types of cancer, its clinical trials as a cure for Alzheimer's disease may be started in the next three to four years. We shall recall also that the increase the risk of developing Alzheimer's disease contributes to the saturated fats found in animal products including dairy. These fats damage the tissue lining the blood vessels in the brain that allows amyloid protein deposited in plaques. Back |
