The US researchers at University of Michigan came to the conclusion that those who adhere to a low-in-calories diet have a greater risk of contracting SARS.

In the experiment, the mice treated with low-calorie food, in the first days after infection died from infection more frequently than the mice that received normal food. The limitation of caloric intake is the reduction of calories by 40% compared with the normal diet, while maintaining the normal amount of vitamins and minerals.

"If you met a strange to your body virus, the immune system does not have antibodies to it, so the body is protected with the help of special cells, which kill microbes. These cells, called natural killer cells, are very important in the initial stages of infection control. Calculating the infected cells in the body, they quickly come into the fight. According to our data, calorie malnourished animals are particularly vulnerable to becoming infected, and their immune system can not develop enough to control the number of natural killer cells, says nutritsiologist Elizabeth Gardner.

During the infection the mouse, initially treated with low in calories, longer ached, lost more weight and more likely to die from infection.

From this experiment we can conclude that prepared for the virus the body faster and with less loss to cope with the infection. Adults can limit their calorie content of food for eight months a year, but in those four months, which coincide with the season of colds, better go back to nutritious food. To cope with the additional stress, such as infection, the body needs additional reserves, explains Elizabeth Gardner.

According to other studies, scarce food prolongs the life of all organisms, from yeasts and ending with the primates. The researchers believe that the findings can be applied to certain groups of people such as children and elderly people who eat little but often take vitamins.

Immunization, of course, protects against influenza, but they are directed only to certain types of virus, whereas a person may face the completely different kind of them.
