Scientists have found a new genetic marker for the diagnosis of autism. It does not affect the changes in the DNA sequence, and determines the switching on and off of genes, according to the scientists from the Medical Center in Durham.
People with autism have increased the number of molecules that regulate the expression of oxytocin receptor. Methylation level in certain nucleotides for oxytocin receptor gene exceeded by up to 705, compared with 40% in healthy people.
Oxytocin is the hormone that influences social interaction. It is regarded as a possible treatment for people with autism. The authors suggested that the study affect the ability to recognize people who react to the introduction of oxytocin. |
