Austrian researchers found that the substance of spermidine, in large quantities contained in the sperm and grapefruits, significantly extends the life of a variety of organisms.
Previously, it was found that spermidine is a small linear molecule from the group of polyamines and it is essential for growth and maturation of cells, while its content in the cell decreases in the process of aging.
Researchers from the University of Graz added spermidine in the diet of unicellular and multicultural organisms. It turns out that growing in a nutrient medium with the addition of the polyamine yeast live 3-4 times longer than without it, and human immune cells (specific to type is not specified) - almost three times. The life span of fruit flies Drosophila and microscopic round worms when you add in their meal spermidine increased by about 30 percent. In mice fed a polyamine-rich food, there was a marked decrease in age-damaged proteins of the organism.
Presumably, such action spermidine is due to its positive influence on the genetic regulation of autophagy. It is in the processing of their cell components damaged by external factors, such as ultraviolet radiation or chemical
oxidants. When autophagy occurs rapidly enough, the cell is full "garbage" that leads to its death. Spermidine prevents this, at least in part.
Effect of spermidine on the human aging process remains to be explored.
