Last year more than 124 thousand people in Europe got cancer because their weight exceeded the normal. Tens of thousands of people, gaining excess weight, at risk of contracting cancer, said the experts.
Researchers studied the cases of cancer among people suffering from obesity. It turned out that the most prone to cancer is women living in the Central European countries, such as the Czech Republic, Latvia, Slovenia and Bulgaria. The most frequent diseases encountered in this group were
breast cancer and endometrial cancer, cancer of the colon and rectum.
Perhaps, obesity may become the biggest problem affecting the risk of cancer, said the researchers who presented their work at the European Cancer Congress in Berlin. According to the World Health Organization for 2002, 70,000 new cases of cancer in 30 countries in Europe were associated with being overweight. According to the experts, although the European countries are taking steps to combat excess weight, the situation still requires urgent and effective measures to combat obesity. Scientists hope that these findings will push health systems of European countries to take urgent action to address the problem, reports Reuters.
