Before
drugs for depression starting to act, it may take several weeks, which is unacceptable for people with suicidal tendencies. According to new studies, intravenous administration of Ketamine as the drug, previously used in the anesthetic purposes, provides a rapid antidepressant action.

Experts decided to study the effect of Ketamine in patients with severe depression and suicidal tendencies with no respond to standard treatments. It was found that Ketamine dramatically reduces the level of suicidal ideation within 24 hours after a single injection. Such a change in the direction of thought patients persisted when they were given repeated doses over the next two weeks. The results were published in September issue of Biological Psychiatry journal.
According to the experts, if this finding is confirmed in larger studies in patients with high levels of suicidality, Ketamine can be used as one of the options for treatment when the expectation of conventional
antidepressants may endanger human life.
This study was only preliminary, and it was attended by a small group of patients suffering from depression. Scientists believe that it is necessary to conduct further studies to confirm the results.
