Canadian scientists showed to the world community a higly effective drug decreasing considerable risk of strokes. Professor Dr. Stuart Connolly states that dabigatran lowers strokes, heart attack and bleeding risks during atrial fibrillation.
Severe risks of strokes and circulatory system problems are caused by upper heart chambers quivering. Earlier this heart problem was treated with warfarin and aspirin. Despite of the warfarin efficiency many people could not use it due to the side effect called severe bleeding.
Stuart performed the test among 18 thousand people with atrial fibrillation. The patients took
warfarin or 110-150 milligrams of dabigatran also known as Pradax or Pradaxa.
The results indicated that the annual stroke risks for people using warfarin is 0.38 percent and the annual stroke risks for those who took dabigatran 0.11 percent on the average. The mortality index for people using warfarin is 4.13 percent each year and the mortality index for those who took dabigatran is only 3.69 percent on the average.
Connolly made a report about the test results during the Cardiology Congress in Barcelona. His report was published by New England Journal of Medicine.
Soon he performed the next series of tests about the clopidogrel effect among atrial fibrillation patients. The compound of clopidogrel and aspirin decreases the risk of vascular events by 11 percent, the risk of strokes by 28 percent and the risk of heart attacks by 23 percent. But this drug increased the major bleeding risk by 0.73 percent in a year.
These tests were performed among 7,500 patients and soon Connolly made a report about the test results which were presented at the Annual Scientific Meeting of American cardiologists.
